Newtown was once known as "the Leeds of Wales" due to the busy textile industry. It is from these roots that the co-operative movement grew, initiated by our most famous local figure Robert Owen, "The Father of Socialism". A town centre museum now recollects his achievements while the weaving heritage is displayed at the Newtown Textile Museum. In the shopping centre several interesting building styles crowd the streets and include the ornate Barclays clock tower and a restored brick and timber W H Smith, that houses a permanent exhibition of the famous retailing dynasty.
